Iran reportedly moves to close Strait of Hormuz after US attacks

Source: The Hill

This file photo from around 1980 shows the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial 20-mile-wide sea link between the Persian Gulf oil-exporting nations and shipping lanes to oil-importing nations.

The Iranian Parliament has approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint, after the United States bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, according to the Iranian state media on Sunday.

While the Parliament has voted in favor of closing the strait, the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council, according to state media.

Closing the strait, located between Iran and Oman, could have serious implications for both the global and U.S. economy.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations advisory reports ongoing high electronic interference in the region, especially disrupting GPS systems. Interference originates from Bandar Abbas and the central Arabian Gulf, causing some vessels to navigate the Strait of Hormuz only during daylight. Increased ship congestion is also noted near Dubai and southern Gulf of Oman.

I don't think it's incorrect to say the Parliament "moved" to block the Strait. That just means they made their decision, which the country’s Supreme National Security Council will decide whether to implement.

I blame the headline writer at The Hill, which the op was quoting. I think the limits of the Parliament's power are pretty clear in the text of the article. Headlines are often thrown together in a hurry, usually by someone other that the author of the peace. I've seen bloopers like this before, where a headline appeared to have been constructed by someone without a full understanding of an article's content.

In the Latest Breaking News forum, we are told to use the title exactly as it appears in the piece, so the inacuurate headline got perpetuated in the post's title. Unfortunate, but anyone who read the whole post would get a more nuanced view.

Iran has anti-ship missiles launched from land. They'll get intercepted and launchers destroyed.

I wonder what Iraq will do if they can't sell oil or if one of their ships get hit. Iraq's been cozying up to the Iranians.

Posting links to X is still allowed under the DU TOS. As long as it's not against the rules, I don't think any of us has standing to tell people not to post them (much as we might prefer not to see them here).

If you feel those links should be banned. I suggest raising the issue with the site administrators. It's been discussed in the fairly recent past, but no action was taken at the time. Imo, it never hurts to revisit an issue like this from time, in case the tide of opinion has changed.
