H-1B Update: Florida Announces Major Change Impacting Thousands of Workers

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Tuesday directed the state’s Board of Governors to end the use of H-1B visas at public universities, accusing schools of hiring foreign workers instead of qualified Americans.

DeSantis, a Republican, said Florida would not “tolerate H-1B abuse,” arguing that universities should be producing enough skilled graduates to fill those positions.

Overall, Florida has had roughly 7,250 H-1B approvals and renewals, thus far, in 2025.

Why It Matters

The H-1B visa has become a target for those opposed to parts of the legal immigration system—namely, work-based visas. It's a good thing. I've long wondered why so many in the IT professions (myself included), are being displaced by H1B recipients. We have a fine education system for IT related jobs, and from MY experience, we often know more than our "offshore" counterparts.
Where possible, companies need to "hire American" as often as feasible even if there is a small hit to the company's bottom line.

My brain is going to blow a gasket. It's like shifting an automatic transmission from drive to reverse at 65 mph. Something's going to break.

I'm already confused with MTG's new positions.
