Trump calls Jack Smith a 'criminal' who should be in prison in latest attack on his perceived foes

President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for former special counsel Jack Smith and others to be “investigated and put in prison,” the latest example of his increasing demands for the prosecution of those he perceives as political enemies.

"These thugs should all be investigated and put in prison," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "A disgrace to humanity. Deranged Jack Smith is a criminal!!!"

The president linked to an article by the conservative digital news outlet Just the News about the FBI probe that was the precursor to Smith's investigation into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Congressional Republicans have expressed outrage over the initial probe, known as the "Arctic Frost" investigation, which GOP senators said involved the FBI analyzing personal cellphone data of Republican lawmakers.

Lanny Breuer, an attorney for Smith, responded in a statement to NBC News saying: “As we informed congressional leaders last week, Jack is happy to discuss his work as Special Counsel and answer any questions at a public hearing just like every other Special Counsel investigating a president before him has done. We hope the House and Senate Judiciary Committees will agree so the American people can hear directly from him. Name the time and place. Jack will be there.”
