Prince Andrew is to be stripped of his royal titles and will move out of his home at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Buckingham Palace has announced. King Charles has initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew, who will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the palace said. It is understood the king had the support of the Prince of Wales in the decision and Andrew did not object to the process.
The decision follows anxiety within the royal household about the reputational risk to the monarchy caused by continual headlines concerning Andrews friendship with the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual assault against him by one of Epsteins victims Virginia Giuffre. This month the Guardian published extracts from the posthumous memoir of Giuffre, who died by suicide in April, aged 41. In the book she claimed the prince believed that having sex with me was his birthright.
Andrew has always denied claims he had sex with Giuffre when she was 17, and settled a civil case with her for a reported £12m with no admission of liability. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.
Their majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse. It is understood that Andrew will move to a property on the private Sandringham estate in Norfolk, to be privately funded by the king. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also move out of Royal Lodge and will sort out her own living arrangements.

Andrew's links to the child sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein continue to cause controversy. It is understood that although he denies the accusations, Buckingham Palace considers there have been "serious lapses of judgment". (3,627 posts)Having to strip your own brother of his entire royal status and kick him out of his house must feel terrible. And Beatrice and Eugenie have to live under this for the rest of their lives. Dang
This is a sad story for everyone it touched.
I just wish we had the systems and courage in this country to hold our own high-level abusers to account.

(14,603 posts)This is a calculated public relations operation. (and while one can argue the position that is was necessary ... )
It still bears the element of the tabloid - and the tawdry.

(39,213 posts)She just delayed the full punishment until after she was gone. The kids (including King Charles) are carrying out their mother's final wish for Andrew. The only thing that wasn't made clear was kicking him out of the Royal Residence.
He's still a multi-millionaire, and he can live on his investments quite comfortably. He just can't be a "royal" anymore. Nobody is coming to his rescue either ... those bridges were burned long ago.

(88,323 posts)I can only guess, but I suspect this was talked over, within the family, and it looks like there were no objections.
Charles has to think of the wellbeing of his whole family and the throne thats been entrusted to him (and them), well into the future.
Hes always shown himself to be a serious thinker and evaluator. Charles has things, events, and dynamics to consider that few others in the world have in their shoulders. And as someone whos watched the royal family for years, it strikes me that he understands the weight of responsibility that he has to live with. And its probably ground into him from childhood. His sibs got to relax a little, to varying degrees, but nobody has played more fast n loose than his brother Andrew has.

I guess I'm okay with that.
(I am neither a royal hater, nor a part of the fan club. I do, however, absolutely loath the tabloids - and all that they represent. On both sides of the pond. )

(39,213 posts)This happened when it became obvious that Andrew was going to be served with lawsuits and summonses by Virginia Roberts' lawyers. Andrew knew that his mother was going to hear everything anyway, and he preferred that she hear it from him.
The Queen told him immediately to resign from all of his speaking engagements and appearances representing the royal family. He was to keep out of sight and out of the media as much as he could manage. They tried to keep it hushed up as much as possible, when Andrew's lawyers made offers to settle the lawsuit etc. I think there were 2 lawsuits, one in the US and one in Britain. A lot of it was posted on DU because that's where I read about it.

(14,603 posts)your own account says, "not really."
And - I will maintain that dumping Andrew - is a public relations move on the part of the royals. (and a bit cheesy and shallow along with it)
The wild card here (that I admit to having no idea about) - is the recurrent theme/suggestion - that this move by the family is predicated on a 'more and worse to come' scenario.

(39,213 posts)I'm pretty sure that the royal siblings all knew what Andrew was getting away with, long before he finally told his mom. They didn't want to be the ones to tell her and I can't blame them a bit.

(105,102 posts)The BBC did a list of possibilities earlier. This moves him handily well away from London (though not as far as the Castle of Mey option would have - that's at the northernmost bit of the British mainland).
Further afield, there's also Wood Farm, on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, which is privately owned by the monarch.
The cottage, described as "small and intimate" by former housekeeper Teresa Thompson, has strong associations with Prince Andrew's parents.
His father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, chose the secluded property as his permanent home when he retired from public life in 2017.
He and the late Queen already regularly stayed there in preference to opening up Sandringham House when it was just the two of them.

(1,421 posts)Wasnt that long ago that reports came out about her being sympathetic to her dear friend Epstein, so I find it odd that shes not mentioned here. I guess they figure she only married the pedo and hasnt got her own title to remove. I also still find it weird that they were divorced in the early 90s but somehow still live together. What was the basis for divorce and how involved was she in the Pedo Island frolics? Ive seen reports shes very bitter about this whole upset in her lifestyle. *cue violins*
The daughters are somehow distanced from all this because they seem to have fairly normal marriages and family livesand lots of sympathy for being related to a couple of really horrible, selfish people.
The whole situation is just weird.
