Iran war triggers talk of supplemental defense funding

Source: Roll Call

Posted March 3, 2026 at 6:45am

Top lawmakers began weighing the potential need for an emergency defense spending package as they returned to Washington on Monday for a briefing on the U.S. and Israeli military offensive against Iran.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters that the need for supplemental funding for munitions was “brought up in discussion” following a “Gang of Eight” briefing with Trump officials, as well as top lawmakers on the Armed Services, Foreign Relations and Appropriations committees. “There are more details to be determined, of course, how long the operation goes and what the need is,” he said after the closed-door meeting.

While Congress will focus this week on war powers resolutions in both chambers that would bar additional military action in Iran without congressional authorization, the odds of enacting a binding measure of that sort appear scant.

But an appropriations bill for additional military weaponry would give Democrats leverage that could affect the scope of future combat in Iran. Bipartisan support would be needed in the Senate to pass supplemental funding, and many Democrats have decried the war as illegal and unnecessary. It’s not yet clear whether enough Republicans are prepared to pursue a supplemental bill for what could be a prolonged war.

Now that we have a Department of War and a Secretary of War, it's a war budget.

These defense contracts are spread all over the country from universities to manufacturing making it very hard for representatives to vote against it because...jobs. Just my humble.

The red states vote for them for pork. The blue state politicians vote for them because they're scared of being targeted as anti-military.

We live in a clown country.

Literally American capitalism would collapse without the trillion dollar annual infusion of monies redistributed by the federal government to these useless phony defense jobs.

There certainly are plenty of universities and companies in other states that get contracts. In addition to reserve units and military bases. I agree about others being afraid of being anti military.

We should not even be there in an illegal war. Congress has not even given him the authorization to be there, but rethugs want to throw money at it. I will be really pissed at any Dems who sign on for doing that. Plus, it could hurt us in the election because most Americans want no part of a trump war.

Contracts will be awarded to trump buddies who will give him a cut. He needs to mind his own business here at home, and do something good for this country.

That's when we lived in a sane country that didn't have to get up and take off our hats every other inning of a baseball game, though.

Could this be why the military higher ups said….don't do it? But here we are and now of course he will need more money. Who didn’t have that on their bingo card?
