David Attenborough, the excited but hushed voice of nature programs, turns 100

LONDON (AP) The BBC is hosting a party for David Attenborough at the Royal Albert Hall. Cinemas are playing his nature films. Friends have spent weeks lavishing praise on the man and his work.
But the worlds most famous wildlife presenter is likely to be uncomfortable with all the attention as he celebrates his 100th birthday on Friday, said Alastair Fothergill, the producer of some of Attenboroughs most well-known documentaries and the director of Silverback Films.
Hes always been very clear to all of us that work with him: Remember, the animals are the stars, Im not, Fothergill told The Associated Press. So, yes, surprisingly for one of the most famous men on the planet, he doesnt like being famous at all.
But Attenborough has had to accept the accolades this week as scientists, politicians and conservationists celebrated the man who has brought frolicking gorillas, breaching whales and tiny poisonous frogs into living rooms around the world for more than 70 years.

(1,857 posts)Sadly, there are so few people in the news that can be seen as guiding lights in this Bedlam of a world.
A-social Media has elevated the most deplorable Influencers to the level of gurus, without any depth of knowledge or Wisdom. Im no genius, but I could see this at the start.
In my darkest moments I fear that the only way out for Humanity is to be near-anihilated and start again (as in A Canticle For Liebowitz), but

(10,826 posts)He was the controller of BBC 2, at the time the only TV channel that could broadcast in colour. Coverage started with the 1967 Wimbledon championships. It was realised that white balls dont show up well on colour TV sets. Though it wasn't until 1986 that Wimbledon had yellow balls as the norm.
He also was responsible for making snooker popular on TV in the UK. In monochrome everything is a shade of grey. Of course, a game with coloured balls is perfect for colour TV. Had to be, when you got commentators saying "for those of you watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green".
Oh and he commissioned this comedy series called Monty Python's Flying Circus.
