Canada to order military plane fleet from Sweden in shift from US suppliers

Mark Carney announces purchase of Saab’s GlobalEye early warning aircraft to patrol Arctic territory

Canada has announced plans to buy a fleet of early warning planes from Sweden’s Saab rather than a competing option from Boeing, as the country seeks to reduce reliance on US defense firms.

Mark Carney, the prime minister, said on Wednesday that Canada would opt for Saab’s GlobalEye, which is based on Bombardier’s Global 6500 jet. Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail plane – which has suffered from delays and cost overruns – had also been in contention.

“With a suite of advanced sensors and mission systems, Saab’s GlobalEye will be a key resource for the Canadian armed forces to detect and deter threats across the Arctic,” Carney told a defense conference in Ottawa.

Gee, who would have thought that threatening one of your closest allies and punitively taxing the goods they produce would have repercussions?

I hope that when this is all said and done, and a Democrat is in the White House, that the AG will relentlessly prosecute all of the corruption of this administration and the law makers who allowed it to happen.

If not we are over. Done.

I say even if the SC says he had the right to do anything, then keep at it with every damn charge and make them rule one after another.

We’re going to need a counter protest if dems win in the fall and Trump tries to stir sh-t up next January.

The mistake was we stayed away on Jan 6th. There might have been a different outcome if there were counter protesters at the official Electoral College vote.

Canada To Buy Early Warning Planes From Swedish Saab, Not American Boeing

Canada selects Saab GlobalEye early warning planes over Boeing, boosting Royal Canadian Air Force capabilities and supporting Canadian aerospace jobs.

Canada, who is working to reduce reliance on US defense firms, on Wednesday announced plans to buy a fleet of early warning planes from Sweden’s Saab rather than from Boeing.

Reuters quoted Prime Minister Mark Carney saying that Canada would opt for Saab’s GlobalEye, which is based on Bombardier’s Global 6500 jet. Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail plane – which has suffered from delays and cost overruns – had also been in contention.

It further said that the project aims to provide the Royal Canadian Air Force with advanced airborne command, control, and surveillance capabilities to detect, track, and respond to threats at long range, including in the Arctic.

“(This move) builds Canadian strategic autonomy, creates Canadian jobs, and reinforces Canada’s position as a global leader. And it is the product of choice ‌for many of Canada’s partners, including France, Sweden, and the UAE," Carney said.

Canada seems to be getting closer to Europe. There is talk of Canada joining the EU. That would be cool.

There is currently a competition between Germany and South Korea for 12 diesel electric subs. This weekend two SK frigates and a submarine came into Esquimalt, Canada's west-coast naval base. They really want the contract as it's the longest deployment in SK naval history.

My guess would be the South Korean boat because they could get it faster. But if they want to signal support for Europe, selecting the German boat would be another way to do that.

I think Germany's bid has $85 billion in incentives over the life of the contract and South Korea is over $100 billion. These include construction of components for the subs, ongoing maintenance in Canada, and other non-submarine defense construction (armoured vehicles being one project).
