Sen. Mark Warner on Sunday called the new acting director of national intelligence, Bill Pulte, a national security risk. In an interview on CNNs State of the Union, the Virginia Democrat said Pultes lack of national security experience and his loyalty to President Donald Trump pose a threat to election security.
What he could do is take a single piece of intelligence that may not be corroborated or make something up and say, country X is going to interfere or is sending people to encourage non-citizens to vote, and that be used as an excuse for Trump to bring in ICE, federal troops close down elections, seize polling stations, said Warner, vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The list is extraordinarily frightening, and again, this guy doesnt have any national security background.
President Donald Trump tapped Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as temporary director after Tulsi Gabbard announced plans to leave the agency at the end of the month. Trump has yet to tag Pulte or anyone else as his official nominee.
Pulte made headlines last year for recommending the Justice Department launch investigations into Democratic lawmakers, Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James over unproven allegations of mortgage fraud. None of the allegations have led to a conviction.
