Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, hospitalized for second time in just a few months

Source: The Independent

Sunday 14 June 2026 18:56 BST

Sen. Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized for an undisclosed medical issue, according to a spokesperson. The 84-year-old was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning and “is receiving excellent care,” his office said. It wasn’t immediately made public why he was taken to the hospital.

McConnell has suffered a series of health issues in recent years and was hospitalized for eight days in February for flu-like symptoms. He has also suffered injuries from falls and left the public concerned when his face briefly froze while he was speaking.

McConnell is Kentucky’s longest-serving senator after being first elected to the Senate in 1984. He was also the longest-serving Senate leader, having held the position for 18 years before stepping down in 2024.

McConnell announced last year that he won’t seek reelection. His term will end in January 2027.

"So, Congressman, in the last two weeks, you repeated AOC's talking points on Venezuela, and Jasmine Crockett has retweeted you. When will you change your party affiliation to Democrat?" asked Downs.

Massie responded, "I thought you knew. I vote with Republicans 91% of the time, and the 9% I don't, they're taking up for pedophiles, starting another war, or bankrupting our country."

While laying there in that hospital with the best care in the World and ZERO insurance worries.

"His most notable votes to end the ACA in 2017 included:

July 25, 2017: Voted YES on the motion to proceed to begin debate on a sweeping ACA repeal bill.

July 25, 2017: Voted YES on a comprehensive measure drafted by his office to end the Medicaid expansion, cut subsidies, and eliminate tax penalties.

July 26, 2017: Voted YES on an amendment to repeal major parts of the ACA without a replacement.

July 28, 2017: Voted YES on the "skinny repeal" amendment (McConnell Amendment 667), proposing to repeal the individual and employer mandates."

He voted some 60-65 times to cripple the ACA or just kill it.

35. It wasn't "immediately" made public why he was taken to the hospital?
Mon Jun 15, 2026, 01:19 AM

Okay, so he was taken to the hospital on Sunday morning. It's 20 minutes past midnight now (1:20 am Monday Washington DC time), and as far as I have been able to learn, no reason has been yet been announced. If "immediately" was a horse, I'd say it left the barn a long ass time ago!

I doubt that we'll ever be told the reason for the hospitalization. One of 3 things will probably happen:

1. If he croaks, the news will switch to being all about funeral arrangements, and we'll be given a minimal amount of information about the cause of death.
2, If he recovers enough to return to work, we'll be given a suspiciously rosy report on his condition.
3. If he survives but is not in any shape to fake continuing to be a senator, we'll be told that he decided to move his retirement up, and we'll be given a suspiciously vague report on his condition.

No matter what happens, none of us here at DU will miss him!
