MLB issues warning to Giants pitchers who wrote Bible verses on Pride Night caps

After three San Francisco Giants pitchers appeared in Friday’s game with Bible verses written on their Pride Night caps, Major League Baseball issued a warning that similar behavior will not be tolerated. ... “The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations,” Pat Courtney, MLB’s chief communications officer, told The Athletic in a statement that Outsports first reported. Giants right-hander Landen Roupp started the game with “Gen 9:12-16” written on his cap, with the end of the verse bleeding into the rainbow “SF” logo. Relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker also had Bible verses on their caps, while Sam Hentges came out of the bullpen with the Giants’ standard black cap with an orange logo rather than the Pride Night hat.

“It’s just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy,” Roupp told reporters when asked about the Bible passage. “That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that, and I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want … and express what we want.”

The Giants were the first professional sports team to host a game that raised awareness and money for the HIV/AIDS epidemic with “Until There’s a Cure Day” in 1994. And in 2021, they became the first team to incorporate the rainbow colorway on their on-field caps for their annual Pride game.

"I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want … and express what we want." Yeah asshole, now go back to school and learn about what's really in the First Amendment, then talk to your agent about contract law.

I have to relate the story of a Coast Guard buddy and I walking on the base. He was a short-timer and took that very seriously.

A salty old chief spotted us and started ripping Gilbert a new one. He ended the tirade by demanding that he visit the base barber, if memory serves me, in tow.

He then stared me up and down and sideways and declared that the plastic cover I bought for my cap was non-uniform and to trash it. It WAS raining. Oh well. No pushups or haircut doled out.

You didn't get more squared away than me. We were the odd couple. He was on the way out and I was there waiting for assignment.

But that's another story (or stories)

Genesis 9:12-16

12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

Maybe he's making some sort of comment on LGBTQA's adoption of the rainbow as a Pride symbol? Like it means God's Covenant not Homosexuality?
