Exclusive: Downed US pilot reported seeing Iranian drones swarm in 'jellyfish' formation

Source: CNN Politics

PUBLISHED Jun 23, 2026, 4:00 AM ET

A US fighter jet pilot rescued by special forces after being shot down over Iran in April described a shocking sight before ejecting from his aircraft: multiple Iranian drones hovering in the air, moving as one, in a formation that resembled a jellyfish, according to four sources familiar with the matter.

The account, which has not been previously reported, was shared by the F-15 pilot with intelligence officials during a debriefing after the incident. It immediately set off a firestorm of debate within the US intelligence community that has yet to be resolved. If the airman really saw what he described — a formation moving in unison — it would be an alarming advance in Iranian drone capabilities.

“Multiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs,” one of the sources familiar with the pilot’s witness account told CNN. “Real alien sh*t.”. Another source told CNN the pilot described witnessing a “minefield of drones” in the air.

While the exact cause of the F-15 downing is still being investigated, initial reports indicated that it was possible the drone formation had in some way enabled Iran to shoot down the American jet, according to two of the sources.

I don't know why they are shocked. I expect every night somewhere in the U.S., there are synchronized drones engaged in some kind of "fireworks alternative" performance.

5. The light show synchronized drone tech has been in use for over a decade

and as they say, all they need for control is "a laptop".

Apparently this could be adapted to some of the military drones.

8. That's amazing, and it looks like a lot more than 8,000 drones.

I never knew GPS could be so precise, if that's how they coordinate them.
Some of those appear to be packed very close together too, so I don't know how the deal with the prop wash and turbulent air caused by other drones in formation. Amazing!

2. No doubt the pilot crashed his own plane and made up the story about the drones, Iran was totally defeated, we won.

We hold all the cards, all the drones and we totally won, okay?

3. That was my first thought too. They think the Iranian army rides camels and fight with swords.

4. Musk's brother owns a company that does coordinated drone displays

In 2022, Kimbal Musk became an entrepreneur in multi-drone coordinated aerial displays. Through the holding company Nova Displays he bought the Intel multi-drone coordinated aerial displays subsidiary and nine thousand drones.

So, yeah, the technology is out there commercially.

7. Synchronized drones is not so uncommon.

It sure impresses me, but the military should just see it as innovation rather than mysterious UFO science. I imagine we have the same capability.

I suspect a news agency sexed up the report to grab a headline.

9. Odd that the news story said "Iranian" in the title, with no mention of UAP

Look at the quote from the sourse.

Real alien sh*t.

Clearly, I'm not saying that's it, but it should be in the title.

14. I see two equally plausible explanations here
Tue Jun 23, 2026, 11:52 AM

Explanation 1: "Drone shows" are a thing. They use Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS to guide hundreds or thousands of drones over a preset pattern. RTK GPS relies on two inputs: the satellites, and a precisely-located base station to correct errors in the satellite data. If Explanation 1 is true, the Iranians bought a drone show system from a Chinese company, tore the drones down, and retrofitted the guidance systems into armed Iranian-made drones. Iran has a fairly decent defense industry, or at least they did before Trump started dropping bombs on their country.

Explanation 2: There's at least one drone show contractor in Iran. This individual either conducted a drone show on his own accord or he was hired by an Iranian city to do one, in either case to make the locals happy. (They have been getting Trump's bombs and missiles dropped on them for months. They could use a morale boost.) The F-15 pilot saw this, freaked the fuck out and let his jet go out of control. The "jellyfish" thing is what suggests to me this is what happened - a "jellyfish" formation makes no tactical sense but it'd look really cool, and "looking really cool" is the whole point of drone shows.

16. Not plausible...

.... My understanding, and from news reporting, Iranian drones are fixed wing aircraft, not rotary "copters". If so, they could not possibly do what is described.
