There Is One Crucial Reason We're Talking About Boots on the Ground -- NYT opinion essay

https://archive.ph/zojGW

"Somewhere in the mountains of Iran lies a hidden stockpile that is poised to define the future of America’s war against the theocratic regime: 18 to 20 scuba-tank-like canisters, each of which contains up to 55 pounds of highly enriched uranium, the main material for making a nuclear weapon.

Iran spent decades and billions of dollars amassing that material, prompting Democratic and Republican presidents alike to insist America would do whatever was necessary to prevent Iran from getting a bomb. Iran’s nuclear program has been severely damaged by U.S.-led air attacks over the past nine months. American officials and experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency believe the uranium has nonetheless survived...

The United States and Israel believe most of the highly enriched uranium is in a tunnel complex outside the city of Isfahan, which has not been the target of major bombing attacks during this campaign. “We’re always highly focused on” the uranium, the under secretary of defense for policy, Elbridge Colby, said at the Council on Foreign Relations on March 4...

After Mr. Trump’s decapitation of much of Iran’s leadership, the security of the stockpile is at risk. Converting the highly toxic material in the canisters into the metal for a weapon is probably beyond the abilities of terrorists, but rogue forces might view it as a decent insurance policy ... The United States and Israel have the capability to secure Iran’s nuclear materials; this is one scenario in which there could be boots on the ground. Elite commando units among America’s special forces train to conduct high-risk operations to detect, seize and neutralize chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threats. The United States maintains a system, called the Mobile Uranium Facility, that allows American scientists to quickly characterize, stabilize and package uranium. It’s made up of several shipping containers that can be loaded aboard military cargo planes and sent anywhere in the world from its current location in Tennessee at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Israeli special operations forces units have been training toward a mission to seize Iran’s nuclear material for more than a decade,..."

Without plans inside plans inside plans to deal with this? This is yet another proof that the Orange Monster and his admin are totally unqualified for ANY frickin' job in government. This is like the fifth damn thing that looks like a complete cluster f*ck.
Fucking amateurs who think they're experts.

Editing to add: and putting boots on the ground there is insane and would not be popular with the people of Iran. Who haven't had a ground war in a generation. And therefore has plenty of fresh troops and civilians who would be eager to join, and defend their homeland against the evil USA. I'm sure Putin would love to provide arms for them.

7. The U.S. has always supported the continue existence of Israel in perpetuity. Israel's enemies are the Muslim

neighborhood it lies in. Iran's proxies like its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah, who were initially supported by 1,500 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) instructors, who helped unify various Lebanese Shia factions under Hezbollah's leadership; and Hamas, whose founding charter was the complete annihilation of Israel.

I'm a Zionist. (Catholic, too) I am for the existence of Israel, however Israel defines that. Many believe what I believe -- that whether they believe the Messiah came for them or not, the Jews are Christianity's older brothers -- the ones God directly revealed Himself to through Abraham and Moses.

I agree with John Fugelsang, that Jesus himself was

A peaceful, radically nonviolent revolutionary
Who wasn't American and never spoke English
Who hung around lepers, hookers, and crooks
never sought tax cuts for the rich Nazarenes
Was anti-wealth and anti-death penalty
Anti-public prayer, too (Matthew 6:5)
Never asked lepers for a co-pay
Never called poor people "lazy"
Never even slightly antigay
Never mentioned abortion
Supported paying taxes
And was a long-haired
Community-organizing
Authority-questioning
Anti-slut-shaming
Brown skinned
Palestinian
Unarmed
Homeless
Jew...

but only if you believe what's actually in the Bible.

3. North Korea has nukes and they are a crazed extremist regime and no one seems freaked out about that

Any country that uses a nuke will get nuked back, MAD-style.

I'm not clear on why Iran is such a bigger threat to the world than North Korea.

6. Considerations: Unlike North Korea, which is relatively isolated, Iran actively arms and funds proxy groups

across the Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen), increasing the risk of nuclear technology or material proliferation.

Strategic Location/Oil Markets: Iran sits on critical global energy transit routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, where a nuclear crisis could trigger global economic disruption.

Short Breakout Time: Although not yet having a nuclear weapon, Iran has accumulated uranium enriched up to 60%, just below the 90% weapons-grade, allowing for a fast, "breakout" to a bomb.

Nuclear Ambiguity: Iran's nuclear program is, "well distributed and hardened against attack," making it harder to destroy compared to North Korea's.

While North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests and can threaten the US mainland, it is already a, "nuclear weapon state". The Institute For Science And International Security notes that Iran is seen as a more immediate, unpredictable, and shifting threat.
Conversely, North Korea's threat is more mature and direct, with established, "delivery capabilities," but Iran's potential to trigger, "a regional war that could bring in the United States," often places it higher on the global threat list.

It's also worth noting that the secular history of the Shia nations, which are only 15% of the Muslim world, are the source of most armed conflicts. Their beliefs about "jihad" are externalized. Also worth noting is that primarily Sunni nations of the Muslim world that want to do business with the West.
