... had a half of garage of Christmas stuff was an eyeopener: what was expensive and pretty wasn't after 50 years.

We haven't bought anything in years other than an occasional light string, and it was shocking what a large pile of un-recyclable waste of resources it was. No salvage value, the copper was minimum.
