Usual traffic is backed up at the entrance and I look over at the car in the next lane. He's got his left hand on the steering wheel and I his right hand, he is holding a bowl, probably cereal, with a spoon sticking out of it.

(29,813 posts)While stopped at a traffic light, I once saw a woman plucking out chin hairs with a tweezer. That is one of the very last things I want someone to see me doing.

(15,554 posts)I was a passenger once while another woman was applying makeup while driving.
That was the first and last time I ever rode with her.

(6,483 posts)That was way before self-driving cars. In the local paper last week, a woman hit a light pole trying to change her shoes while driving.

Self-driving cars are becoming more common. You're supposed to remain vigilant and take over the driving at any moment, when required. But many people are too complacent. The technology isn't foolproof, so interesting (and maybe dangerous) times will ensue.

(18,168 posts)I have no doubt it's going to get worse. A week or so ago here in upstate New York, a State Trooper caught up with a car that was reported for driving erratically on an interstate.
The woman inside had her face pressed against the window... asleep. Her lane correction assisted steering kept her alive for six or seven miles. Then it took her off on an exit ramp, and she hit the corrugated strips along the edge, and she woke up.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
