(1,869 posts)I lived in Santa Cruz where KFAT and later KPIG reigned supreme and invented the Americana genre. Laura Ellen was the genius program director with the unerring ear.
I once went to the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville on a business trip. It was a singer songwriter night when a handful of performers would sit in a circle and trade songs, backing each other until it was their turn to contribute a song. During a break I went to the bar to order a beer and offered to buy Paul Thorn a beer, telling him Id heard him on the radio. He couldnt believe it and asked me where. When I said KPIG he called out to the other musicians and said, hey this guys from Santa Cruz! He heard me on KPIG. Then he bought me a beer. They all knew KPIG because it was the only station where their kind of Singer/Songwriter music got played. Groundbreaking.
BTW KPIG is still on the air though its predecessor KFAT is long gone.
