Of course, songs like this, Casbah, and Train In Vain got them slagged by the British punks.
They started caring too much about sounding good.

Bur, all three of those went mainstream & the punks hated that.
Same thing happened in the US to Talking Heads & Television.
The American punks slagged on them when they started caring about precision, especially to TH, which is a bit odd since they were never punk. But, the Ramones fans at CBGB started hating on them after More About Buildings & Food.
Lots of bands go through that, I guess. Even Van Halen got slagged by the hard rock crowd when Eddie bought an Oberheim.
