Jimi Hendrix was in the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division from May 1961 to June 1962. He enlisted to avoid a prison sentence and was honorably discharged after an ankle injury sustained during parachute training, though his superiors had also found him unsuited for service due to his constant focus on his guitar.
