Judge Throws Save Boca Measures Off January Special-Election Ballot Tied to Downtown Project

BOCA RATON, FL — A Palm Beach County Circuit judge on Tuesday threw the two ballot questions that the advocacy group Save Boca wanted to put in front of Boca Raton voters off a January special-election ballot.

Ned Kimmelman, a retired lawyer, sued Save Boca, which was formed to fight against Boca Raton’s proposal to redevelop 30 downtown acres into a government campus, its founder, Jon Pearlman, the city and the supervisor of elections office.

He recently dropped Pearlman and Save Boca from the lawsuit. Nonetheless, the judge ruled on the language used on their ballot initiative.

“The ballot language drafted by Save Boca raised a number of issues as to interpretation, implementation, and costs,” Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer said in a statement. “We await the court’s written decision on what additional legal issues it identified.”

And I have been shocked at how strong the opposition to this project is. I am also a consultant in the municipal area and these kinds of projects are not that unusual anymore but the details of this one really have fired people up.

They can get it off the ballot but I doubt very seriously that it will proceed because it will be the end of any politician's career if they support it. They have already had to go back to the drawing board several times for revisions due to the push back.

The mayor has turned out to be a GOP operative trying to get businesses to leave California and New York with promises of low taxes. None of which is surprising for a municipality but he has done it with the kind of sneering condescension for "those" places that screams right wing.

The people are fed up. They don't want more development and traffic.
