Lake Charles will have a new mayor as Marshall Simien (D) wins runoff over incumbent (R)

Marshall Simien Jr. defeated incumbent Nicholas "Nic" Hunter (R) on Saturday in a runoff election for mayor of Lake Charles.

Simien received 52% (7,703) of votes cast, while two-term incumbent Hunter had 48% (7,049), according to unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State. The race saw a 32% turnout among registered voters.

Simien, 63, held the Lake Charles City Council District A seat from 2005 to 2013. In addition, he served on the Port Board from 2003 to 2005. Simien, an Independent, is a lawyer and president at Simien Law Firm.

Previously, Simien told The Advocate he is the best candidate for the office because of his experience in government and law degrees, 20 to 25 years of public service and representation of businesses.
