Did you know there are 4 National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom sites in St. Mary's County?

September is International Underground Railroad Month. To honor the courageous journeys of freedom seekers, be sure to visit:
🛏️The Old Jail Museum (memorial of Benjamin Hance, the only documented lynching victim in St. Mary’s County history)
🏡 Historic Sotterley (exhibits highlighting 165 years of history including slavery and the legacy of systemic racism)
🏫Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland at St. Mary's College of Maryland (immersive art experience that honors the story of resilience and creative problem-solving that defined the lives of the enslaved individuals that once lived in St. Mary's City)
🌅Point Lookout State Park & Civil War Museum (significant military site for the United States during the Civil War and facilitated the freedom of numerous enslaved people)

that the Underground Railroad encompasses such large geographic areas.... living in Vermont, there are areas designated as part, and now that I am in the Eastern Shore, it runs right through where I live here.... an incredible feat
