Michigan House speaker (R) gets Lions tickets from lobbyist while blocking open records bill

Lansing — Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall obtained tickets through a Lansing lobbying firm to a Detroit Lions game on Nov. 2, four days before he reiterated his vow to kill bills to expand the state's open records law to legislators.

Hall, R-Richland Township, and the lobbying firm that provided the tickets, Public Affairs Associates, declined to let The Detroit News review a check that Hall handed over to the firm or to provide details about how much he paid. Those pieces of information might be accessible if the Legislature expanded the Freedom of Information Act, known as FOIA, to cover lawmakers because the policy would allow the public to review text messages and emails exchanged between lawmakers and lobbyists.

“We’re not doing FOIA," Hall said during a Nov. 6 Capitol press conference. "We’re just not going to do FOIA.”

Those comments came four days after Hall and at least one family member watched in person as the Lions lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 2 from seats he obtained through Public Affairs Associates, the lobbying firm that represents the Detroit Lions.
