Hamtramck mayoral recount advances despite winner's late challenge

The Wayne County Board of Canvassers voted on Tuesday to approve a recount in the Hamtramck mayoral election after City Councilman Muhith Mahmood challenged his six-vote loss last week.

The recount is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 2, beginning at 9 a.m. and will continue until all ballots have been counted. The results would eventually be forwarded to the Board of State Canvassers for approval at a December meeting that hasn't yet been scheduled.

Adam Alharbi, who came out on top in the initial vote count and was endorsed by Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib, filed a challenge to the recount petition, but did not meet the Friday deadline for filing.

At Tuesday's meeting, Alharbi said he was unaware of the deadline for challenging the recount — Friday, Nov. 21 at 2:47 p.m. — though Board of Canvassers Chair Lisa Capatina sent a letter and an email to Alharbi on Wednesday informing him of the deadline.
