Hamtramck mayoral recount advances despite winner's late challenge
The Wayne County Board of Canvassers voted on Tuesday to approve a recount in the Hamtramck mayoral election after City Councilman Muhith Mahmood challenged his six-vote loss last week.
The recount is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 2, beginning at 9 a.m. and will continue until all ballots have been counted. The results would eventually be forwarded to the Board of State Canvassers for approval at a December meeting that hasn't yet been scheduled.
Adam Alharbi, who came out on top in the initial vote count and was endorsed by Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib, filed a challenge to the recount petition, but did not meet the Friday deadline for filing.
At Tuesday's meeting, Alharbi said he was unaware of the deadline for challenging the recount Friday, Nov. 21 at 2:47 p.m. though Board of Canvassers Chair Lisa Capatina sent a letter and an email to Alharbi on Wednesday informing him of the deadline.
