📣DANGER ON THE BEACH: Cape Hatteras, Buxton

PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE: Cape Hatteras National Seashore visitors should avoid the beach and stay out of water in Buxton following Oct. 28 collapse of five unoccupied houses.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) is strongly urging its visitors to avoid the beach and stay out of the water from the Village of Buxton south to the Cape Point area, due to yesterday’s collapse of five unoccupied houses. Varying amounts of hazardous large and small debris litter the beach to the south of the collapse sites and large pieces of lumber have been observed in the surf and shorebreak. All visitor access from the north end of Buxton to near off-road vehicle ramp 43, is closed due to public safety concerns.

On Oct. 28, the following five unoccupied houses collapsed in Buxton:
• 46002 Ocean Drive
• 46003 Ocean Drive
• 46016 Cottage Avenue
• 46213 Tower Circle Road
• 46223 Tower Circle Road

The Seashore is working to reach each of the owners of yesterday’s collapsed houses to determine their plans for cleaning up debris along Seashore beaches. A limited number of Seashore staff are moving some large debris above the high tide line; conditions will be reassessed and a plan for cleaning up debris developed later this week. Most large and small debris associated with the mid-September to mid-October collapses of 10 privately-owned houses was cleaned up prior to the Oct. 28 house collapses.

There is the potential for additional house collapses in Buxton in the coming days. Learn more about the threatened oceanfront structures that border the Seashore at: http://go.nps.gov/cahatos.

Recent weather conditions have also impacted a few off-road vehicle ramps on Hatteras Island, leading to a few temporary closures. Visit http://go.nps.gov/beachaccess for beach access updates.
