Sugar Land mayoral election, two city council races headed to runoffs

The Sugar Land mayoral race and two city council elections are heading to runoffs in June, according to unofficial election results from Saturday.

William Ferguson and Carol McCutcheon – both current city council members – are vying for mayor. In a crowded race that drew six candidates, including council member Nashaud Kermally, Ferguson won nearly 36% of the votes, while McCutcheon received almost 29% of the votes.

Ferguson's city council seat was up for re-election this year, but he instead opted to run for mayor. McCutcheon and Kermally both vacated their seats to run for the position.

Current Mayor Joe Zimmerman was not eligible for re-election because he reached his term limit. Zimmerman filed to run for a city council position, but withdrew from the race in February.
