'Crunch time' Travis County works to clear voter registration backlog ahead of November election

AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, Travis County’s head of voter registration said her team will be working overtime, not just processing new applications but also clearing a backlog she blames on an upgraded statewide registration system.

“We’ve been working really hard over the last 10 days or so,” said Celia Israel, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector. “We really got crunch time from the state of Texas.”

Israel told reporters her team is “all hands on deck” clearing a backlog of about 8,000 applications, an effort that will continue even after Monday's registration deadline for the Nov. 4 election passes.

Israel and the county’s head of elections blame a recent upgrade to the state’s voting registration system.
