Seattle lands women's pro hockey team at Climate Pledge Arena

The Professional Women's Hockey League is coming to Seattle.

The league on Wednesday announced Seattle will become the eighth team in the league starting next season. The team will play at Climate Pledge Arena and train at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate. The PWHL didn't reveal the team name but said the colors will be "emerald green and cream."

Climate Pledge developer the Oak View Group and the Kraken led the bid for the new team, but the league is centrally owned by Guggenheim Partners CEO and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his group the Walter Group. The announcement makes official buzz that had been swirling for more than a week, after Vancouver, B.C., landed an expansion team.

Seattle and Vancouver mark a major western push for the PWHL, as the next westernmost team is the Minnesota Frost. The other five teams are clustered in the Northeast: Boston, Montreal, Toronto, New York and Ottawa, Ontario. The PWHL said in a news release the addition of Seattle could help the league secure a national media rights deal in the U.S. The league has such a deal in Canada, but it only has regional deals in the U.S.
