Democratic lawmakers call for constitutional right to privacy in Wisconsin

Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature want to update the state Constitution to add a right to privacy they say will shield state residents from federal overreach across a wide range of topics, from abortion access to immigration enforcement.

“We want to protect our Wisconsin residents,” said Sen. Melissa Ratcliff, D-Cottage Grove. “It is up for interpretation, ultimately, by our Supreme Court. … That’s how constitutions are supposed to be: living documents.”

Ratcliff is among 11 Democrats in the Senate and 36 Democrats in the Assembly listed as cosponsors of the resolution.

The senator said the constitutional language can cover myriad issues including medical privacy, which she said is under attack, referring to recent pressure from the Trump administration for hospitals to stop providing gender-affirming care to transgender patients younger than age 18.
