More than 60 Labour MPs call on Starmer to set timetable to quit

More than 60 MPs have called on Keir Starmer to set a timetable to depart as prime minister, including backers of his leadership rivals Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting.

MPs from across the party’s ranks said the prime minister had failed to convince them he had what it took to lead the country into the next election.

In a speech earlier on Monday, Starmer said he would not resign and would prove his doubters wrong, saying Labour was facing “very dangerous opponents” in Reform UK. He said he would fight any leadership challenge and would not walk away from his responsibilities as prime minister.
...
At Monday lunchtime, the co-chair of the Labour Growth Group, Chris Curtis, once considered a loyalist group, said Starmer could not deliver the change the country needed. “I therefore think it’s time for us to look for new leadership,” he said.
...
Later in the day, three junior frontbenchers – all parliamentary private secretaries – also called for Starmer to go. Streeting’s PPS, Joe Morris, alongside Sally Jameson from the Home Office and Tom Rutland from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

This looks pretty serious for him - and Labour, unless they somehow find a replacement who can do wonders compared to Starmer.

On a lighter note, I got my Labour election leaflet today - 4 days after the election. I suspect this was mainly Royal Mail's fault (you know, that "Royal" thing owned by a Czech billionaire), not delivering it until they had another letter for me. But I think it must have been sent pretty late by Labour to not come with something earlier.

Keir Starmer’s grip on power appeared to be slipping away on Monday as cabinet ministers urged him to set out a timetable for his departure and more than 70 Labour MPs publicly called for him to stand down.

The Guardian understands that two senior cabinet ministers – Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, and Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary – told the prime minister he should oversee an orderly transition of power after crushing election defeats risked ringing the death knell on his premiership.

At least two others – believed to be John Healey and David Lammy – discussed with Starmer how they should take a “responsible, dignified, orderly” approach to what might follow. Several others – including Richard Hermer and Steve Reed – were defiant, urging him to fight on.

One cabinet minister told the Guardian: “In the end Keir has listened to cabinet ministers – there are differences about where this will go and what is in best interests of party and country. He’ll have to make a decision about what he’s going to do before cabinet tomorrow”.
