But this MAY be under the control of the sender.

I use Thunderbird; in my server settings, under Return Receipts I have selected 'Never Send a Return Receipt'. I can't speak for other email clients or web IMAP emails such as Gmail.

Trawl through the settings to see what's on offer. I don't use hotmail.

Look for 'return receipts', 'read notifications' or similar. You may find it.
