French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a national service scheme to bolster the armed forces. Macron says the service will begin next summer. Volunteers aged between 18 and 19 will be given military training and will be active for ten months. Macron says the change is needed to deal with shifting security threats facing France.

... after 18yrs old because he would have been drafted into the French military right from the airport if he entered French territory.
I'd think their target should be retention of already serving personnel.
BTW, he did serve in the Army in Iraq for five years including 11 months in "stop loss". I'll never forgive GWB for that extra 11 months. He didn't want to draft civilians for his shit war because he felt the public would cream the GOP in the next election - so he "drafted" serving troops by extending their hitch if they weren't in the US when their discharge time came up.

(124,532 posts)2. My brother was sent to Iraq under "stop loss" in Desert Storm.
It was an eventful tour for him since he was stationed in West Germany when the Berlin Wall came down.
