Related: About this forumHas anyone ever had surgery for diverticulitis?
I may be facing it, but am really afraid to do it. However, the health issues by not doing it maybe worse.
Was it successful for you or anyone you know?

(6,502 posts)In a small rural hospital in Missouri. Had three actually to correct the problem. This was in the early 80's. Came through it fine and healthy. Several months of discomfort and a temporary colonoscopy device for him, but then total health. I'm sure the surgery has improved immensely since then. Good luck with your decision.

(25,050 posts)She was very happy with the result, wishes she had done it years ago. She claims it cleared up other gastro-intestinal issues she had been having, as well.

(5 posts)My Dad had this issue. He had surgery a few times, but this was back in the 60's... he lived to be 86...
What is your diet like? I think a diet with fiber, is good? I remember after I left the house, he would ridicule my healthy diet (whole wheat bread etc) but then he had to do that b/c of diabetes. I don't remember him having that problem after adding these things to his diet.
Have they suggested a dietary change for you? I would try that to avoid surgery.

(5 posts)My son is a Dr. of Acupuncture and he recommends this FODMAP to people, just googled it and its for diverticulitis. My Dad used to get it after eating pork I think?
Acupuncture can help with this condition as well... alongside dietary changes & whatever your Dr. says...

(17,084 posts)all of the time, always. Then with the help of an old friend I was made to realize it was depression too. There is a book called
"The Second Brain". It is about the direct connecion between your gut and your brain. I take an SSRI for the depression and the
"feeling sick always" passed. Constipation is the enemy. You have to have a smooth colon. Best to you. Learn all you can. Some of the best days of your life are yet to come.

(2,122 posts)My diverticulitis kept recurring. The fear is that one or more diverticula will breach the colon wall and result in sepsiswhich, of course, can rapidly kill you. The solution was to remove part of the colon. A great young surgeon went in, removed a couple feet of colon, stitched the pieces back together, and Bobs youre uncle. I was up walking around in a few hours and remained in the hospital for three days while they waited for a bowel movement. No recurrence of diverticulitis since then.
