My cat Dixie, known escape artist was gone for 48 hours in below 20 degree weather.

5. Years ago my cat slipped out the back door and took off in subzero weather

and was gone for six days. We tried to follow his tracks in the snow with no luck - soon we were frantic and feared he'd frozen to death, but one morning he turned up at the back door with dried leaves in his fur and very hungry. He stuffed his face and then went to sleep on a radiator, with no explanation. He probably holed up under a porch somewhere but we'll never know. He never ran out again.
