Related: About this forum? Anyone ever try the thunder headband for your dog.
I just ordered one for my furry boy. Over the years we have had two other dogs besides my furry golden who lost it with thunderstorms.
Breaks my heart the thunder blanket didnt work so
Ill try this. With the previous two the one pup was the smartest dog we ever had. A female collie retriever mix and then Mr. Big paws the bestest golden retriever ever well besides Dunc.
Yet with Dunc i can feel him laying next to me shaking in fear and doing the stress yawning. I dont know what to do for my best floof guy. If this thunder head band doesnt work perhaps sedatives from our vet.
Thanks for your advice or suggestions in advance.

(109,411 posts)One of my own prior doggy girls was so terrified, she'd go into the bathtub behind the curtain in the pitch dark. The first time I looked everywhere for her only to find her there with her reflective eyes shining back at me, it scared the living hell out of me. But, that was her spot. I'd try to hold her and she'd tremble so much she'd have both of us near heat stroke, so I just let her go there.
But, that was before thundershirts and the like...

(534 posts)The trick is to put them on before the storm. It relaxes them beforehand and works better. I also turn on a wind tunnel fan on high speed. The sound helps drown out the sound of the thunder. CBD for dogs is also very helpful. I hope this helps Duncan.

(35,552 posts)As pups he would start with a cap gun and make a bang every time he fed them. Then he would gradually increase the loudness. They be so happy every time they heard a loud bang like a gun or thunder.

(24,955 posts)For 4th of July, we'd start giving him Benadryl (1/4 tsp) the night of the 3rd and then again on the 4th. He did so much better once we switched to this. He still didn't like fireworks or firecrackers so would go and lie in the bedroom with his head under the bed. But he was sooo much more calm and didn't piss on the rugs in fear anymore or shake in fear. The vet recommended the Benadryl treatment and amt. Astro probably weighed 70 lbs.

(7 posts)My 12 year old Shih Tzu has gotten super scared of thunderstorms and fireworks in the last few years. Worse, she will stress pee everywhere unless I carry her or put her in the doggie cart and wheel her through the house until it's over. Thundershirts didn't help at all, vet prescribed trazadone which also didn't work. But then my vet prescribed a gel that you squeeze in her mouth shortly before trigger sounds are expected. Makes all the difference in the world: now she stays calm and relaxed - even during hurricanes.
My 8 year old male Shih Tzu is the opposite. He couldn't care less. He goes outside during thunderstorms and hurricanes not just to do his business but just to have stroll around the pool.

(10,062 posts)he was also afraid of the dryer at the groomer. We used a Happy Hoodie on him (which is probably similar to the headband you asked about) and it made all the difference. The noise level is so reduced that now he just stands there calmly while she blow dries him. I don't see why it wouldn't help with other loud noises.
