the last sight (iii)
what was my sister’s last sight as she slowly faded into death
crumpling at the top of the steps shut suddenly with a silence
confusion all around confusion all within of desperate thoughts
paramedics swarming performing all the necessary indignities
leaning faces of doctors nurses and orderlies racing with time
breathlessly heartlessly fading into the gray uncertain unsure
claimed by the nothingness being bereft of all those beloved
a final blank bleak blackness breaks and life becomes no more
and i clueless thousands of miles and even many hours away
going about my morning routines coffee toast checking notes
sudden notice sudden calls and suddenly a world upside down
racing the hours against a clock arriving to late much too late
sleeping alone in a house of almost silence creaks and groans
a little dog’s hopeful hopeless search clicking across the floor
