Beltane blessings to everyone!
Tonight is Beltane Eve, the start of the bright days of the year.
From Wikipedia with a few edits of my own:
Beltane or Bealtaine is the Gaelic May Day festival, marking the beginning of summer. It is traditionally held on 1 May, or about midway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Historically, it was widely observed in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man.
Beltane is mentioned in the earliest Irish literature and is associated with important events in Irish mythology. Also known as Cétshamhain ('first of summer'), it marked the beginning of summer and was when cattle were driven out to the summer pastures. Rituals were performed to protect cattle, people and crops, and to encourage growth. Special bonfires were kindled, whose flames, smoke and ashes were deemed to have protective powers. The people and their cattle would walk around or between bonfires, and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. All household fires would be doused and then re-lit from the Beltane bonfire. These gatherings would be accompanied by a feast, and some of the food and drink would be offered to the aos sí (fairies). Doors, windows, byres and livestock would be decorated with yellow May flowers, perhaps because they evoked fire. In parts of Ireland, people would make a May Bush: typically a thorn bush or branch decorated with flowers, ribbons, bright shells and rushlights. Holy wells were also visited, while Beltane dew was thought to bring beauty and maintain youthfulness. Many of these customs were part of May Day or Midsummer festivals in parts of Great Britain and Europe.

(854 posts)I danced around the Maypole at a public school in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, when I was in first grade, 1960 or so. Thank you for celebrating the day. Maybe tomorrow I'll where my hair band that I decorated with silk flowers!

(7,922 posts)There was a permanent tall metal pole at our school in Wayne NJ. A few days earlier, the school custodians got out long metal chains and attached them to the top of the pole. I can't remember whether there were ribbons attached to the chains or not. My class performed a Danish dance and our moms sewed the costumes.
We were taught how to make paper May baskets some years. We put wildflowers in them and gave them to neighbors.
