(JEWISH GROUP) May is Jewish American Heritage Month

Congregation Shearith Israel is the first synagogue in the colonies and was established in 1654 in New Amsterdam by Jews who arrived from Dutch Brazil, it is the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. This was started by Sephardic Jews.

Traces the events leading to the arrival of the first group of Jews in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in 1654 and describes how they adapted and eventually prospered under Dutch, and later British, rule.
