(JEWISH GROUP) Berklee ousts star trumpeter after antisemitic comments surface

Berklee College of Music has ousted Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton after a conservative news outlet surfaced social media posts he made in 2020 critical of Jewish people.

Payton, who was named chair of Berklee’s brass department last fall, announced on social media that Berklee officials had told him last week that he had “24 hours to resign or be terminated.”

Berklee officials confirmed Payton’s ouster but did not provide further details or give a reason for his dismissal.

“Nicholas Payton is no longer employed by Berklee College of Music,” the school said in a brief statement to the Globe. “It is our practice not to comment on personnel matters.”

1. Here's a question: What took them so long?

Making antisemitic statements has been a feature with Mr. Peyton for some time.

Did it take a petition with over 5,000 signatures to get the school to get around to firing this guy?

Some of his statements are provided in the above link. So much malice and ignorance. Apparently, Berklee didn’t care about his antisemitism until they had to, which is a part of the story I would be interested in knowing about.
