Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump's ignorance of history leading to repeating the mistakes of the past.
Currently, Trump has his eyes on two separate countries. In both cases, he's publicly said things that demonstrate his lack of understanding when it comes to history is guiding his actions. and it will most likely lead to him repeating the exact same mistakes of the past.
Trump said, "Look, for 47 years, no president was willing to do what I'm doing, and they should have done it a long time ago. It would have been a lot easier. There is no president that wanted to do it. And yet, every president knew. I have spoken to a certain president who I like actually a past president, former president. He said, I wish I did it. I wish I did, but they didn't do it. I'm doing it."
Yes, I am sure he had tears in his eyes, too. All living presidents deny this happened. If this mythical president existed, it would be great to ask why he didn't intervene, but 47 years is a weird place to start a timeline, right? Not 50, but 47.
Was there perhaps anything before then that might have led to the events of 47 years ago? If you go back the 3 years to 50 years ago, you would see massive protests pushed along by anger toward the Shah and fed by economic turmoil. Huh?
Why was the Shah so hated? Let's go back further. Oh, yeah. That's right, because he had a brutal state security apparatus.
Where did their military get their weapons? Huh? from the US. That's why Iran has maybe had at this point F-14 Tomcats. Why would we be supplying him? Because in 1953, the only democratic government Iran ever had nationalized some Western interests so we along with the British overthrew the government and the West helped put the Shah in power. So the people in Iran viewed him as a puppet. It's not a straight line from 53 to the 79 revolution, but the line always runs through DC.
When musing about Cuba, he said, You know, all my life I've been hearing about the United States and Cuba, and when will the United States do it? I do believe I'll be having the honor of taking Cuba.
When will the US take Cuba? In 1898. Formal military rule would begin in 1899. In 1902, military rule ends and Cuba has a US citizen as president. That didn't last long. And in 1906, the US occupied the country again until 1909. We sent Marines back in in 1912. Then again from 1917 to 1922. There was a lot of internal back and forth in Cuba. Then in 1952, Batista came back to power via a coup. The US quickly supported the coup and continued to support him until even the CIA was like, "Hey, this guy is really corrupt, brutal, and militarily incompetent."
Do you know how bad you have to be for the CIA circa 1950s to pump the brakes? They started looking for a moderate. But by 59, Castro was in power. By 60, he had nationalized US interests. See the pattern?
By 1961, the Bay of Pigs happened. That led to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 with both countries. Trump is old enough to have been alive for the coups that brought in the governments that were replaced by the governments currently in power. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do know history are doomed to watch others tweet as they repeat it.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
