Former federal prosecutor and U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy had the unusual experience of being the chief investigator for two of our nation's most infamous incidents in recent years: the deadly Unite The Right Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In his new book, "Harbingers: What January 6th and Charlottesville Reveal about Rising Threats to American Democracy", Tim gives readers not only a compelling analysis of those two incidents but a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the two investigations he headed up.

In this extended conversation, Tim shares his key takeaways from these investigations. For example, he writes: ". . . the law enforcement response to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville and the attack on the US Capitol on January 6th were strikingly similar. In both instances, law enforcement gathered ample intelligence that accurately predicted violence.

Planners had a large array of interagency resources at their disposal, sufficient to prevent the violence suggested by the intelligence. Nonetheless, police agencies in Charlottesville and Washington, DC, failed to protect public safety. These events represent two examples of a dangerous pattern of law enforcement failures to adequately understand the threat of violence presented by largely white domestic violent extremist groups. Unless we accurately assess and learn from this phenomenon, we are doomed to repeat it."
