Trump gets more bad news from Canada election - Brian Tyler Cohen

Transcript:

yesterday Trump managed to
single-handedly deliver a victory to
Prime Minister Mark Carney in Canada
turning a massive yearslong advantage
for Pierre Palev and the Conservative
Party into a shock upset win for the
Liberal Party well turns out things got
even worse because not only did Trump
ruin Palev's chances at becoming prime
minister snatching defeat from the jaws
of victory but he just ended Polyv's
political career at least for the moment
palev lost his own seat in Canada's
parliament to his liberal opponent Bruce
Fanjoy in other words thanks to Donald
Trump this guy went from the odds on
favorite to lead Canada to completely
unemployed in the course of fewer than
100 days and let's be clear Polyv knew
full well the liability that Donald
Trump posed that's why on the day of the
election he tried to stem some of the
bleeding taking to Twitter and writing
"President Trump stay out of our
election the only people who will decide
the future of Canada are Canadians at
the ballot box canada will always be
proud sovereign and independent and we
will never be the 51st state today
Canadians can vote for change so we can
strengthen our country stand up on our
own two feet and stand up to America
from a position of strength but clearly
too little too late the reality is that
it is far too difficult for the
Conservative Party in Canada to distance
itself from the Conservative Party here
in the United States and so in the same
way that Donald Trump has been a drag on
the Republican tickets across the US and
special elections held this year more on
that in a moment he also served as an
anchor on the necks of these
conservative parties even in other
countries and to that point when I say
that Trump has been a drag on
Republicans prospects here in the United
States I mean it since Trump took office
where he demanded total feelalty from
his party and then went on to tank the
stock market the economy 401ks consumer
confidence and surge costs now the rest
of his own party is forced to bear the
political burden of that and the
electoral consequences have been beyond
apparent just a few weeks ago the two
Republican candidates in Florida's
special election underperformed by 16
points and 22 points from the party's
2024 margin in Wisconsin liberal Supreme
Court Justice nominee Susan Crawford
overperformed the 2024 presidential
election contest by 11 points on route
to her victory in that race in
Pennsylvania Democrats overperformed by
15 points and 17 points in two in two
state legislative seats on route to
victories there one of which solidified
Democratic control of the Pennsylvania
state house and the other of which
flipped the seat from red to blue across
the US of the 16 races held since
election day 2024 Democrats are seeing
an 11.4% swing to the left with two of
those races seeing Democrats flip seats
formerly held by Republicans according
to the strength and numbers newsletter
from data scientist Elliot Morris now
thanks to the down ballots data archives
we can compare the average swing in
special elections in 2025 to the average
swing in special elections held in 2017
there were 67 state legislative special
elections held in 2017 for the 2018
midterm cycle according to their
tracking in those Democratic candidates
beat Hillary Clinton's margin versus
Trump in 2016 by 11 points so an 11point
swing for Democrats in 2017 and 10
points for 2025 so far 10 is not so
different from 11 in fact the US loomed
so large in Canada's election that this
is what Canada's prime minister Mark
Carney said after his election victory
our old relationship with the United
States a relationship based on steadily
increasing integration is
over the system of open global trade
anchored by the United States a system
that Canada has relied on since the
Second World War a system that while not
perfect has helped deliver prosperity
for a country for decades is over
these are tragedies but it's also our
new
reality we are
over We are over the shock of the
American betrayal but we should never
forget the lessons but you're going to
take us forward we have to look out for
ourselves and above all we have to take
care of each other
when I sit down with President Trump it
will be to discuss the future economic
and security relationship between two
sovereign nations
and it will be with our full full
knowledge that we have many many other
options than the United States to build
prosperity for all Canadians
we will strengthen our relationship with
reliable partners in Europe in Asia and
elsewhere in the world and if the
US doesn't want to play
a a pivotal role in the world economy we
will lead not the
Americans we are masters in our home
we'll build millions of homes we'll
become an energy source power we'll
provide good specialized jobs and
careers and will create one single
Canadian economy not 13 because this is
Canada and we decide what happens here
so I hope it was worth it for Donald
Trump to come into office threatening to
annex our sovereign neighbor and one of
our closest trading partners and friends
i hope it was worth it to impose tariffs
that would crater our own economy by
launching us into a trade war that we
couldn't win and I hope it was worth it
to turn a runaway victory for his own
ideologically aligned counterparts into
a massive upset for his decidedly less
ideologically aligned counterparts in
Canada when I say that everything Trump
touches turns to don't take my word
for it just look at Canada's election
look at our stock market global
sentiment our retirement savings
accounts and our impending recession and
look I am under no delusions that
Republicans are going to learn from the
mistakes of the very recent past up to
and including today the reality is that
they know full well the risks associated
with aligning themselves with Donald
Trump and enabling his dangerous and
deranged behavior but they do it anyway
because they've decided to allow him to
have power over them and now they can't
get it back they have established the
precedent that Trump gets to usurp all
of their control their dignity their
voice and they're left as barren husks
who exist to display slavish devotion to
just one man i got to say truly one of
life's great mysteries how other
countries don't seem especially
interested in replicating the profiles
and courage set forth by our Republican
party and I'll end with this trump may
view himself as this great uniter of the
world but they are united in mockery
scorn and derision of just one person
Donald Trump and by now everybody has
his number trump you got to take him
seriously like take him literally and
seriously and so when he says the thing
about our sovereignty going to make you
the 51st state quite frankly you're the
governor he doesn't call me that what
could you say to him because before all
this he was saying it's the 51st state
quite frankly they're very weak you're
going to come the prime minister is the
governor and then you had a phone call
with him and he's like "The prime
minister is not that bad he's very smart
i'm looking for What did you do you have
like new polaroids of him i don't want
to see him." But do you have them what
the hell did you say to him uh well one
of the thing look he respects strength
and uh what' you say well first some
people said that we have American bonds
and that you maybe threatened to sell
those off to kind of hurt the American
dollar and is that is there any truth in
that i I couldn't possibly comment but
that's like
