Neither the phone company or Comcast offered residential internet service back then.
And we probably needed the money for food.
Comcast made it very difficult to quit, especially by phone. I ended up driving to their local office and confronting a supervisor directly. After rejecting multiple hard-sell "special offers" I may have threatened to winch the cable connecting our home to their system out of the ground and remove it from our property.
Understanding I was serious, they canceled my outstanding balance from when I'd first tried to quit by phone (document, document, document...) leaving me with a positive balance of thirty some-odd cents. I think they recorded my reason for quitting as "moved" because sure enough a few days later Comcast sales people came to our front door offering special "move-in" deals and I got calls from them for about a year offering to reconnect me in my "new" home even after I told them to stop calling.
My wife and I only watched DVDs for a few years until one of our kids, who was home from college, set us up with Netflix. Since then we've usually subscribed to two or three no-advertising streaming services at any given time, most consistently Netflix, budgeting about $35 a month for television. Most of the money we "save" by not having cable we probably spend on books.
How are you set up for internet? I'm glad I don't have to choose between AT&T and Comcast. I also think internet service ought to be free for low income people because it's becoming nearly essential to have an internet connection to be fully functional in modern society.
