But not for the thousands of families torn apart, the unnecessary deaths, that kind of thing. Those are permanent scars on the mind. Slavery no longer exists, yet the damage from that history continues to this day as well as from post-slavery treatment of African Americans, to name just one thing. Native Americans. Japanese. Irish. The list goes on and on. Those scars remain and that damage is irreparable even now. Just because it has faded in the memory of many (mostly white) people doesn’t mean it’s gone.
