Not all use a "gold star" symbol, some use another form of mark. The star, or compliant mark, indicates the ID meets REAL ID Act standards for boarding domestic flights and entering secure federal buildings.

I recently renewed my Florida license, it has the gold star in the upper right corner. I had to provide a lot more documentation than the last time I renewed it ten years ago. I suspect this type of gold star ID will now be required for voting.
