I am getting a handle on how all of this went down. Re: Iran.

The CIA or some intelligence agency provided Trump with credible information that the heads of State in Iran would all be assembled in one place. And that's why Trump gave the approval for the attack. By all signs it was an impulsive action to take advantage of an opportunity without giving any thought to what would come next. He thought it would be shock and awe and that Iran would be without leaders to retaliate in response.

And he was wrong.

Because he doesn't know what comes next, he dithers between telling people he is ready to walk away, but when Iran continues to retaliate against Middle Eastern countries, those allies of his compel him to stay in the fight. Which, if there is no push back from Congress, will definitely end up putting US boots on the ground.

And the Americans stranded in Israel? Acceptable casualties, I imagine, because it's to Israel's benefit to keep them there to keep America invested in a fight where Trump, is working without a plan.
