Never forget this one absolute truth (that the defeatist Doomers always seem to):

Trump is not omnipotent, and the states and the people are not powerless

As you observed, they are a room full of dopes, with the ability to cause chaos and destruction, but with very little actual control over anything outside of the executive branch.
