2. It's appalling that we are forced to own cars in this society.

That's not freedom.

We ought to be rebuilding our cities to make them attractive affordable places where car ownership is unnecessary.

My wife and I haven't had car payments since the 'nineties, probably because I'm a pretty good mechanic (something I was forced to learn when I was young if I wanted a car ) and we are not afraid of buying cars that are no longer shiny.

Buying used cars is not a solution to the problem, however. Somebody's got to be buying new cars if used cars are to be affordable, and these cars have to be durable.

In the bigger picture people who live in cities and don't own cars tend to have the smallest environmental footprints.
