Will Democrats pursue accountability for abuses of power, or will history repeat itself again?

Serious question.

If Democrats regain power in the future, will they pursue accountability for the human rights abuses, spending violations, and extra judicial actions of the current administration?

Or will they once again decide that “looking forward, not backward” is more important than justice?

Because if we look at the historical record, the pattern seems fairly clear.

Iran Contra (Reagan era)
Senior officials were implicated in illegally selling arms to Iran and secretly funding the Contra war in Nicaragua in violation of congressional restrictions. Several officials were convicted or charged, but many of the key figures were later pardoned by President George H. W. Bush before leaving office.

The first Iraq War and related controversies
While the war itself had congressional authorization, there were major debates afterward about civilian casualties, war conduct, and oversight failures. There were no meaningful investigations of senior leadership once the conflict ended.

The Iraq War era and torture program
After the Iraq War and the CIA interrogation program, there were serious questions about torture and violations of international law. The Obama administration made it clear it did not intend to prosecute Bush era officials, emphasizing a desire to move forward rather than reopen political conflict.

The Plame affair
The exposure of CIA officer Valerie Plame led to a major investigation. The only senior official convicted was Scooter Libby, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney. His prison sentence was commuted by President Bush and he was later fully pardoned by Donald Trump.

The financial crisis of 2008
The collapse of major financial institutions caused enormous economic damage. While investigations took place, very few senior executives faced criminal consequences despite widespread public calls for accountability.

January 6th and the attempt to overturn the 2020 election
Many of the individuals who physically attacked the Capitol were prosecuted. However, the political leadership behind the broader effort to overturn the election largely avoided consequences during the process and later returned to power.

Looking at these examples, Washington has often prioritized stability and political norms over full accountability for those at the top.

So here is the question.

If Democrats return to power, will they pursue meaningful investigations and prosecutions for abuses of power in the current era?

Or will they once again decide that the country needs to move on?

I ask this not out of cynicism but out of concern about the health of democratic institutions. If serious abuses occur and no one in leadership is ever held accountable, it risks establishing a precedent that future administrations may feel free to repeat.

And if Democrats do choose not to pursue accountability, then it raises a difficult question for voters. At some point, repeatedly declining to confront abuses begins to look less like restraint and more like acceptance. If that happens, people may reasonably ask whether the opposition party is truly acting as an opposition when it matters most.

I would genuinely like to hear what others think.

Will there ever be real consequences for abuses of presidential power in the United States?

Or has the system effectively decided that the most powerful officials operate under a different standard of accountability?
