My grandpa spent his childhood in Nazi Germany. He had secret American pen pals and some of what they talked about was life in the US. It gave him hope that things could be better. Later on, with the help of an American sponsor, my grandparents, uncles and mom came to the US. My grandpa especially was fiercely proud of being an American. If he were still alive to see this he'd be heartbroken.
