(72,283 posts)36. These assholes live in mortal terror of a labor deficit.
As long as there is a labor surplus, more people than jobs, employers can keep wages and benefits low, and fire anyone who complains. They can easily fill the job opening with someone currently unemployed.
As the birth rate goes down, the more likely it is that there will be a labor deficit, more jobs than people to do them. Employers have to hike wages and increase benefit packages in order to attract qualified people to do jobs they can afford to be more choosy about taking.
