One effect of the high early turnout could be felt much later tonight.

If voters are still queuing when polling stations are due to close at 19:00, those stations must stay open until the last person has cast their ballot.

Under the rules set by the National Election Office of Hungary, no results can be published until every polling station in the country has closed. The idea is that partial results should not influence voters who are still waiting to vote.

In practice, it means that even a handful of polling stations staying open late can hold up the entire national result.

So if turnout remains high through the day, the story tonight may not just be who wins, but how long it takes before we know.
